Story of the Business:
This new business has made his job easier and more profitable. His business profits allowed him the opportunity to further his education from the Primary level to a Diploma in Computer Literacy with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
Today Umar Inuwa is a 33 year old father of three (3) small children; one of his daughters is in primary school while the other two are still too small to attend school. As a father and an eldest child himself, he has shouldered a great deal of responsibility in his family.
Presently, he provides financial support for about 15 people with the profits from his business. He lives with his father and his father’s family in addition to his own wife, three children and several orphans who he has taken under his roof. He is responsible for food, clothing, healthcare and schooling. He lives in an eight-bedroom house with his family, which he and his father are working together to buy. They have started making payments and will soon own the house. Umar started to learn about the photography business in 1997 when he worked as an apprentice and started a one-man analog photo shop in 2000. Umar came across LI in 2008, and participated in the computer literacy training which LI gave in collaboration with CYDI (Challenge Your Disability Initiative).
Umar then completed a Leadership Initiatives intensive business creation course where he learned the principles of business management, further developed his idea for a photo business, gained skills in digital editing and was able to garner investor support to create a digital photo studio. After LI’s training Umar closed his old analog shop and opened a new digital studio. The training and expertise he acquired from being a part of the LI/CYDI computer literacy program has helped him build his business and to move from the use of analog to digital system. Because of this new digital system, Umar’s business has increased ten-fold allowing him to hire 3 local employees.
This business was the first photo studio in the Bayara community. Due to the location, discounted pricing, and Umar’s knowledge of the passport and government ID programs, Umar has been able to help multiple individuals obtain their passports and other government ID’s to get new jobs within Nigeria and the world.
Umar’s business has also grown significantly due to his ability to create wedding albums using his digital editing software, giving families in his community a chance to purchase affordable wedding photos and albums capturing one of the most memorable times of their lives.
The Gimbiya Photo Studio has created jobs and sends children to school; and Umar, along with his employees, care for local orphans and provide skills training to help make a stronger, happier and brighter Bayara community.
How We Are Transforming Gimbiya Photo Studio
And Changing The World
Throughout the past week, we have learned a lot about developing countries and their problems such as Umar Inuwa with his photoshop business. Umar has been struggling in the city of Bauchi State. Through discussions with Umar, we have determined that there are two main issues, which include unsteady income and advertisement. Our goal is to solve the issues which are affecting his business, and to help him succeed and thrive in the photoshop business.
Umar explained that his income varies between N2,000 to N30,000. Umar expressed that having this much of a gap in income is very worrisome. To solve this issue, Gimbiya Photoshop will form a partnership with a wedding planner. Umar expressed that his favorite thing to photograph are weddings, but this idea will also provide Umar with a guaranteed income. Also, it is able to help out another business by guaranteeing them a photographer for the wedding. Not only that, we also produced more solutions for his advertisment problems. One of our major solutions using our $200 budget and invest it into creating calendars for him to pass out to customers. Calendars will help him because they are something that people won’t throw away unlike flyers and stickers. Also, the calendars will contain pictures of Umar’s work so it’s advertizing his work inside the homes of customers. Both of these solutions will, in time, help Umar’s business in a long term situation. He will able to have a steady income because of the partnership, and better advertisement because of the calendars.
Umar has a very good business going for him with very little problems. With our help, we can help his business grow in many ways and it will improve his life as well. When he makes a partnership and the calendars as advertisement, then his business will grow and good things will go his way. He will have good income which was one of his main problems and more customers. With more customers, his business can thrive for many years to come and we believe that strongly. We put all our trust in Omar, and he puts all his trust in us.
