Global Young Innovators Initiative
Edison Gimbiya Photo Studio
It is the mission of the Edison Photoshop team to remain aware that our work is not for ourselves, but for others. Though we have been made aware of how we might personally benefit from the program, it is our mission to go through this week with the mindset that our efforts are for Umar and his community, not the Edison Photoshop team.
We are five students that have been trained both technically and emotionally to become leaders among our peers, and innovators among business owners in Nigeria. The skills we have developed in the past and those that we will learn this week are to be concentrated towards the individuals who are relying on our solutions, and we will work to the absolute best of our ability to solve the problems that they have called upon us to solve.
Umar and his business were created with the community in mind, and it is the mission of our team to work this week with that same idea. We will strive to establish solutions that will not only benefit Umar personally, but that will also improve the way in which he can serve his community.
By using Umar’s skills to expand other businesses in his community and promoting advertisement so he can share his abilities on a broader level, the Edison Photoshop team aspires to create a better foundation both for the Umar’s specific business and for Bayara as a whole.
See how each day at the summit we are gaining new skills to assist our business partner and transform lives.

Story of the Business:
This new business has made his job easier and more profitable. His business profits allowed him the opportunity to further his education from the Primary level to a Diploma in Computer Literacy with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
Today Umar Inuwa is a 33 year old father of three (3) small children; one of his daughters is in primary school while the other two are still too small to attend school. As a father and an eldest child himself, he has shouldered a great deal of responsibility in his family.
Presently, he provides financial support for about 15 people with the profits from his business. He lives with his father and his father’s family in addition to his own wife, three children and several orphans who he has taken under his roof. He is responsible for food, clothing, healthcare and schooling. He lives in an eight-bedroom house with his family, which he and his father are working together to buy. They have started making payments and will soon own the house. Umar started to learn about the photography business in 1997 when he worked as an apprentice and started a one-man analog photo shop in 2000. Umar came across LI in 2008, and participated in the computer literacy training which LI gave in collaboration with CYDI (Challenge Your Disability Initiative).
Umar then completed a Leadership Initiatives intensive business creation course where he learned the principles of business management, further developed his idea for a photo business, gained skills in digital editing and was able to garner investor support to create a digital photo studio. After LI’s training Umar closed his old analog shop and opened a new digital studio. The training and expertise he acquired from being a part of the LI/CYDI computer literacy program has helped him build his business and to move from the use of analog to digital system. Because of this new digital system, Umar’s business has increased ten-fold allowing him to hire 3 local employees.
This business was the first photo studio in the Bayara community. Due to the location, discounted pricing, and Umar’s knowledge of the passport and government ID programs, Umar has been able to help multiple individuals obtain their passports and other government ID’s to get new jobs within Nigeria and the world.
Umar’s business has also grown significantly due to his ability to create wedding albums using his digital editing software, giving families in his community a chance to purchase affordable wedding photos and albums capturing one of the most memorable times of their lives.
The Gimbiya Photo Studio has created jobs and sends children to school; and Umar, along with his employees, care for local orphans and provide skills training to help make a stronger, happier and brighter Bayara community.
How We Are Transforming Gimbiya Photo Studio
And Changing The World
We as a group have worked out several different solutions for Umar’s photo-shopping business. We target different aspects of how he conducts his business, including his advertising techniques, his connections to the community, the overall efficiency of his shop, and new areas and ways of conducting business. We believe that our broad range of solutions will effectively improve Umar’s business, especially since he is already doing so well. We hope to actually make a difference in his community.
For his shop, we have an idea for Umar to have a display board where he can show the frequency in which different customers have come to him over the course of the month. He would then determine who was the “customer of the month,” where they would then get a photo of themselves hung up in the shop, as well as a portrait for themselves. In addition, we want Umar to have a portfolio that shows examples of his work in different occasions (weddings, school, etc.) We also want him to establish a customer loyalty plan where customers receive discounts for services at different intervals (such as 10th time, etc.) when they come to his business. We plan on getting him a tripod and CorelDRAW, as well as setting him up with time on the internet to review helpful guides on how to use it.
In addition, we have come up with different service and advertising strategies for Umar. We have created sample templates for business cards and flyers that utilize his selected logo. We have also designed package services, where we combine Umar’s photo taking and editing service, as well as varying sizes and quantities of photographs for special occasions like Weddings and school photos. To attract new customers, we would like Umar to offer discounts for 1st-time customers. Also, we would like Umar to consider working with other businesses (in terms of logo and picture editing), to create better connections among the community. We believe that these implementations will both strengthen the professional appearance of his business, as well as increase income for him and his family.
