Global Young Innovators Initiative
Galilei Gimbiya Photo Studio
Our mission is to help Omar capture his community’s cherished moments that will then allow the community to live through their best moments in memory. We plan to dedicate our time and collaborate our ideas to improve Omar’s community.
We want to also help the photo business expand into neighboring communities, ultimately bringing a larger income at a more consistent rate to help Omar and his employees provide for their families. We would like to implement new innovative ways to capture moments through Omar’s photography as well.
We think improving Omar’s business will improve life in Nigeria because not only does it allow people to remember their best moments in life, but it documents history in Omar’s community. If we can expand Omar’s photography business we will be providing many Nigerian’s with everlasting memories that will change their world for the better.
See how each day at the summit we are gaining new skills to assist our business partner and transform lives.

Story of the Business:
This new business has made his job easier and more profitable. His business profits allowed him the opportunity to further his education from the Primary level to a Diploma in Computer Literacy with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
Today Umar Inuwa is a 33 year old father of three (3) small children; one of his daughters is in primary school while the other two are still too small to attend school. As a father and an eldest child himself, he has shouldered a great deal of responsibility in his family.
Presently, he provides financial support for about 15 people with the profits from his business. He lives with his father and his father’s family in addition to his own wife, three children and several orphans who he has taken under his roof. He is responsible for food, clothing, healthcare and schooling. He lives in an eight-bedroom house with his family, which he and his father are working together to buy. They have started making payments and will soon own the house. Umar started to learn about the photography business in 1997 when he worked as an apprentice and started a one-man analog photo shop in 2000. Umar came across LI in 2008, and participated in the computer literacy training which LI gave in collaboration with CYDI (Challenge Your Disability Initiative).
Umar then completed a Leadership Initiatives intensive business creation course where he learned the principles of business management, further developed his idea for a photo business, gained skills in digital editing and was able to garner investor support to create a digital photo studio. After LI’s training Umar closed his old analog shop and opened a new digital studio. The training and expertise he acquired from being a part of the LI/CYDI computer literacy program has helped him build his business and to move from the use of analog to digital system. Because of this new digital system, Umar’s business has increased ten-fold allowing him to hire 3 local employees.
This business was the first photo studio in the Bayara community. Due to the location, discounted pricing, and Umar’s knowledge of the passport and government ID programs, Umar has been able to help multiple individuals obtain their passports and other government ID’s to get new jobs within Nigeria and the world.
Umar’s business has also grown significantly due to his ability to create wedding albums using his digital editing software, giving families in his community a chance to purchase affordable wedding photos and albums capturing one of the most memorable times of their lives.
The Gimbiya Photo Studio has created jobs and sends children to school; and Umar, along with his employees, care for local orphans and provide skills training to help make a stronger, happier and brighter Bayara community.
How We Are Transforming Gimbiya Photo Studio
And Changing The World
Umar wanted to improve and differentiate his photography business. In attempt to help Umar, our team came up with a few possible methods to achieve his goals. One improvement we pieced together was providing Umar’s business with better light technology. Light is a very important piece to successful photography, and providing Umar with lighting improvements would allow Umar to excel even more. Simply, we introduce a softbox flashlight. The softbox diffuses the light, creating an even but bright lighting, that can improve portraits immensely. We believe this will also contribute to the passport photos Umar often takes for clients. Adding lighting to Umar’s studio will greatly improve the quality of his portraits.
Another minor addition would be a tangible guide to all of Umar’s software. It would just be a small convenient addition for teaching employees and trainees. We would also like to help the business broaden the amount of customers by advertising more. We learned that Umar was quite well established in his community, so we looked into having the business branch out into neighboring communities. To help with advertising, we decided on a banner, t-shirts, and a distinguished logo. The logo would provide an image and visual for the Gimbiya business. The banner would label Umar’s shop nicely and potentially attract new customers. The t-shirts would be a form of advertisement that promoted the business outside of the community and would attract new customers from farther away.
Ultimately, we wanted to help Umar create a new packaging for his business to help him differentiate himself more from his competitors in the area. We are suggesting a slideshow program that includes music and unique graphics. Although Umar has previously created slideshows and delivered them in the form of a CD, we think adding new graphics and music could elevate the product and make it really stand out. The program is a simple, cost effective program that would be applicable and appealing for any major event such as a wedding, birthday, or graduation. All genres of music are available to purchase. This program could be a great gateway to better business because of its unique format.
