Story of the Business:
a In 2008, Leadership Initiatives helped Abdulhadi to transform his family’s lives after his participation and completion of Leadership Initiatives’ training programs. As the eldest son of his late father, the responsibility of caring for his family had fallen upon him, and he had no way of providing a sustainable income; however, because of Abdulhadi’s strong leadership skills, LI brought him into the Business Creation Program. LI provided him with business management training and worked to help him develop his idea for a tailoring business.
Once funding for his business had been acquired, Leadership Initiatives was able to provide a tailoring apprenticeship by hiring an experienced tailor to train him and his team. Abdulhadi started his business in 2009 and he eventually became able to take care of his family’s needs, and send some of his siblings to school.
In 2014 Abdulhadi is participating in the Leadership Initiatives Business Expansion program and is expanding his business into new markets. As his knowledge and skills in the tailoring business have grown, so has his customer base, resulting in a higher income for his employees and himself. He now employs 6 people, and says that he and his family will always be grateful for the assistance they received in turning their lives around.
The elders in the community are excited by the changes in its youths’ lives and the role LI has played. Many youths and young adults have had difficulty finding employment and have at times inevitably become involved in criminal activities that posed threats to the community.
With LI’s intervention, many have become employed and this empowerment has become a source of hope for their peers. The projects have given hope to many Yelwa children and young adults that they can learn skills in order to be self-reliant.
Abdulhadi was able to establish the tailoring business and employ 5 main employees and 15 apprentices, including local orphans, secondary school students, and even undergraduate and graduate degree holders who wanted to have a career in the tailoring business.
These achievements earned Abdulhadi confidence and recognition from the community as a role model. Abdulhadi has used the income he earns from the business to go back to college, and fund 6 of his siblings’ educations as well. He also supports his extended family. Abdulhadi has said that this intervention has brought him success in his life and has been an amazing experience.
