Owner’s Personal Story
Maryam was born in 1991 at Kaduna, Kaduna State Nigeria. She attended her Primary school at Kuddus International School, and later proceeded to obtained her secondary school certificate at Queen Amina College Kakuri Kaduna. She waited for one year to get admission into Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
Maryam chose the catering business, however, because she has a passion for cooking and baking. Her goals are to earn a living and give back to her family. Maryam’s father is a retired civil servant, and is married with two grown children, Maryam and her younger sister. He has supported Maryam financially and helped pay for her to go to University. As the eldest child, she now wants to help support him.
Since Maryam opened her business, she has hired and trained two part-time employees, and she is eager to expand the business in order to provide the best catering services in Bauchi.
Maryam is a passionate and independent young lady whose drive for excellence has always kept her going.
Business Owner Timeline
How the business started:Maryam learned how to bake a wide variety of pastries from her friends. She fell in love with catering and has since sought the opportunity to be properly trained in the skill and also to own her own business. Leadership Initiatives has given her that opportunity, and she is determined to make the best of it.
When she joined LI:Maryam joined LI’s Business Creation Program in 2015. LI has given her the chance to realize her dream, and she is excited to be a part of the program.
Who trained her and for how long:As part of the Business Creation Program Maryam has been learning about the catering business from an experienced business owner named Rashida. She went through the training for 6 months and stayed for 3 more months to get extra skills, which give her the opportunity to join the competitive market.
What the training involved:Maryam learned to how to bake cakes, make local juice and cook food for occasions such as wedding, training workshops etc. she is hoping to work with LI’s International Business Alliance Program to explore more on different dishes and pastries.
How she hopes to help her family:Maryam wants to help her father, who has been retired for about two years now. She was lucky to finish her school before her father’s retirement, but since then both have faced financial challenges. The LI program has given her hope that through her business she can help her father financially as well as assist her sister with educational expenses.
